Rotary Smart Village Program

From Ruin to Resilience. Rojan Mazari's Flood Rehabilitation Program Transforms into Rotary Smart Village Program

The Rotary Smart Villages Program is an innovative initiative led by Rotary Pakistan, in collaboration with

  • RC Lahore Jinnah,
  • RC Multan,
  • RC Metropolitan,
  • RC Midtown.

Together, under the umbrella of District 3272  and in partnership with Rotary International, these clubs aim to tackle the challenges experienced by flood-affected villages in Pakistan and other regions. The program’s primary focus is on driving transformation through the seamless integration of innovation and technology.

With a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability and climate stability, the program’s core infrastructure areas include shelter, health, education, growing local economies, and protecting the environment. Pakistan has been severely impacted by climate change, experiencing unprecedented heatwaves, record-breaking rainfall, and flash floods caused by melting glaciers.

Rotary’s roadmap for recovery in Pakistan centers around the development of sustainable indigenous living through the application of innovative solutions and technology. The mission of the program is to transform communities by establishing Smart Villages in flood-affected areas and beyond.

In the initial phase, the program will commence with the construction of a village consisting of over 85 homes in Rojhan Mazari, Punjab. This endeavor aims to create a model village that showcases the potential of sustainable living and serves as a beacon of hope for other communities grappling with similar challenges.

Our Objectives

The Rotary Smart Villages Program is committed to protecting the environment by ensuring zero or minimal carbon footprint and emissions during the restoration and rebuilding processes. The initiative recognizes the importance of sustainable practices and aims to implement them throughout the project.

One of the key objectives is to promote the growth of local economies by incorporating indigenous and technological interventions. This approach seeks to empower the local communities by leveraging their skills, knowledge, and resources, while also introducing innovative technologies to enhance productivity and economic opportunities.

The program strongly emphasizes the significance of supporting health and education in the targeted villages. Accessible healthcare facilities and educational resources are essential components for the well-being and development of the communities. By providing necessary infrastructure and resources, the program aims to improve the overall quality of life and create opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Renewable and alternate energy sources play a vital role in achieving sustainability objectives. The program encourages the use of these energy sources to reduce reliance on traditional fossil fuels and minimize the impact on the environment.

Water sanitation and hygiene interventions are essential for ensuring the health and safety of the communities. The program focuses on implementing effective measures to provide clean water, improve sanitation facilities, and promote                                           hygiene practices.

In order to promote organic and agro-based interventions, the program advocates for sustainable farming practices that prioritize environmental conservation and promote healthier food production.

A participatory mechanism is integral to the program, as it encourages community members to take ownership and pride in the transformation process. By involving the local population in decision-making and implementation, the program ensures that their needs and aspirations are considered, fostering a sense of empowerment and collective responsibility.

Additionally, the program adopts women-centered methodologies to spearhead transformation efforts. Recognizing the critical role of women in community development, the program aims to empower women by providing them with opportunities for leadership, skill-building, and active participation in decision-making processes.

Overall, the Rotary Smart Villages Program encompasses a comprehensive approach to create sustainable and resilient communities. By prioritizing environmental protection, economic growth, healthcare, education, renewable energy, water sanitation, organic farming, participatory mechanisms, and women’s empowerment, the program aims to bring about positive and lasting change in the lives of the flood-affected communities and beyond.
